We are excited to announce the release of a special edition t-shirt celebrating Biodiversity at Hawthorne Valley!
In 2021, the occasion of Hawthorne Valley’s 50th anniversary, the Farmscape Ecology Program released a Biodiversity Report, “Agriculture & Nature Conservation at Hawthorne Valley Farm: A Contribution to an Ongoing Dialogue,” which explores the natural history of Hawthorne Valley Farm and its potential for synergies between farming and nature.
The report highlights the Farm’s rich biodiversity and ongoing conservation efforts, while also acknowledging the challenges posed by the economic realities of farming, climate change, and residential development in the surrounding landscape. Conserving biodiversity on a working farm is an ongoing task. Agricultural techniques and markets change and so does the suite of regional biodiversity. For this reason, one must regularly assess where one is at ecologically, and then bring farmers and ecologists together to determine ways forward.
The t-shirt is available in the Farm Store for $25. A portion of the proceeds from your purchase of this special edition t-shirt will go toward a Biodiversity Fund to help support Hawthorne Valley’s conservation efforts. To read the full report, click here. Linocut illustration by Gina Palmer.
If you would like to contribute to Hawthorne Valley’s ongoing conservation effort in other ways, you can also make a tax-deductible donation to the fund here (select “Biodiversity Fund” in the dropdown menu). Thank you for your support!
